The Wild West - Greenock Style
Wednesday November 29th 2006 , 1:37 pm
Filed under: Scottish Boxing, Amateur Boxing

As the amateur boxing entourage rolled into Greenock on Friday night the partisan crowd were in full voice. There were 10 bouts and 2 exhibitions inside the ring and probably another couple of dozen in the car-park, however we’ll concentrate on those governed by the Queensbury Rules.

Bout of the night was the headliner between Leith Victoria’s Fergus Tennent and local hero Gerry Shields Jnr (Greenock). Fergus must have felt about as popular as Fred Elliot at a vegan conference - but what would a lad from the far east expect in the battle of the docks wild west style. There was not much between them in round one from a scoring point of view although Tennent looked the more aggressive. Rounds two and three saw the bout ebb and flow. Round 4 went all the Leith mans way but by the final bell the lads were all square on points. When the computer couldn’t separate the pair it was left to the judges, who disappointed the volatile crowd and a very game Shields by giving Fergus the nod by 5-0.

In another of the eagerly awaited contests between the two clubs Tommy Philibin (Leith Victoria) never quite produced the goods he does at international level to lose quite convincingly to Chris Walsh (Greenock) Walsh took the best home boxer award for his performance and he probably needed to be at his best on the night.

Best away boxer went to Kilsyth Golden Gloves rep, Chris Craig who had a good win over former Scottish Champion Danny Brown of Newarthill.

Kilsyth’s other fighter on the bill, Scott Mathieson also won over a tough Jamie Taplin of Auchengiech.

Madison’s Jack Gemmell had a big ask against the very experienced Kyle Turner (Greenock) and put up a superb showing but couldn’t clinch the win, however he showed signs of better things to come.
