Ian Millarvie Makes Pro Debut Against Mal Rice

Welshman Mal Rice will be heavyweight Ian Millarvie's opponent when the giant Scotsman makes his professional debut on Monday night at the members and guests only St Andrew's Club.

Rice is generally regarded as a big heavyweight, but he is five inches shorter than Millarvie and will be giving away a lot of weight to the 17 and a half stone man mountain from Hamilton.

The 29 year old from Flint hasn't been in action for almost two years and brings a record of five wins out of 16 contests to the ring. Three of those victories have come by way of knockout and he has also floored two opponents he went on to lose to - including Greg Wedlake who he floored back in 2001, but dislocated his shoulder doing so and had to retire.

Over six rounds however you have to take Ian Millarvie to make a winning start to his professional career with a points victory.

Also on the undercard is unbeaten Light Welterweight George McIlroy who was featured in the excellent BBC documentary, The Fighting McIlroys, earlier this month. He faces another Welshman, Chris Brophy from Swansea, who has won two of nine professional contests. A stoppage win for the Stevenston lad is not out of the question.

Headlining the Burns Night Supper festivities will be Kevin Anderson against Glenn McClarnon for the vacant Celtic Welterweight title.

Note to the Beeb in Queen Margaret Drive. How about covering a night such as this in the future?
