Victor Polo Does A Kebede

Maybe something got lost in the translation, but Victor Polo needs to make his mind up. Either he's seen Scott Harrison in action or he hasn't.

A couple of weeks ago he was quoted as having poured over footage of the WBO World Champion. "I have watched Harrison over and over again and I am positive he will not be able to cope with my work-rate, aggressive style and quick-thinking."

But this week he's doing a Kebede. He claims he hasn't seen anything of Harrison and instead is relying on what his trainer Alvaro Mercado has told him. Mercado was in Walter Estrada's corner when he lost in five to Scott Harrison last March after coming in at short notice to replace the injured William Abelyan.

"From Walter, I learned that Scott Harrison is strong but he is not a good fighter," said Polo at his news conference. "He was confused for the first four rounds with Walter, who was a rookie. Of course, Walter got tired and being a stronger boxer Scott won the fight."

Admittedly, Estrada started strongly and did well for the first few rounds, but by the fourth the only confused person in the ring was the Columbian who needed the bell to see him safely into round five.

When Samuel Kebede came out with the news that he'd never seen Scott Harrison fight, the alarm bells started to ring. And now if Polo hasn't seen him either, all of his pre-fight bluster could count for nothing.

Harrison is incredibly strong for a featherweight, but for Mercado to suggest he isn't a good fighter is to underestimate him entirely. He's a throwback to an earlier date of that there's no doubt, but the only thing robotic about Scott Harrison's style is his single-mindedness.

Victor Polo has been a superb featherweight in his day. Whether his day has been and gone remains to be seen, but his bragging about stopping Harrison and becoming a world champion is sounding increasingly like wishful thinking.

Tickets to see Scott Harrison defend his WBO World Featherweight title against Victor Polo are available from the Braehead Arena (0870 444 6062) and Morrisons Gym, Swanston St, Dalmarnock (0141 554 7777) priced at £30, £50, £75 and £125.
