Tommy Cannon lost only his second fight in his last ten starts at the Moat House, Peterborough, on Monday night.
Up against the 19 year old Cello Renda, Cannon settled quickly, arguably taking the first round, but two big left hooks at the start of the second saw the big hitting Peterborough youngster warm to the task of winning on homesoil.
Tommy was always in the fight however, edging a couple of the middle rounds, but Renda's busyness was enough for him to get the nod from the ref and his biggest scalp to date in his short career. 59-57 the ref's verdict, but Steve Roberts of the Ian Pauly website had it even closer at 58-57.
"It was definitely the hardest fight of the night, and could have gone either way I suppose. Tommy took a couple of rounds mid way, with some good right hands to the head, and Cello withstood them and kept up the workrate.
"Tommy is a great ambassador for Scottish (and British) boxing, both in and out of the ring. I travelled to the Marriott in Glasgow in December, with the Ian Pauly team, and was impressed by his win over Karl Wheeler, he was a tough opponent, and a good boxer.
"Having spoken to Tommy before the fight, and again afterwards, it was refreshing to see a young man with good manners, who is a professional boxer in and out of the ring."
Cello Renda (who incidentally isn't from America as previously reported) also had praise for his Scottish opponent. ''That was tough – the best fighter I've met so far," he told Peterborough's Evening Telegraph. "I took his best shots and knew that if I kept working on my combinations I'd be okay."
