Death Of Jim Watt Overshadows Four Nations For Scotland

The death of Scottish team manager Jim Watt last Thursday morning at the Scotland boxing squad's hotel in Liverpool overshadowed the boxing that took place over the following days.

Jim Watt was "the face of boxing in the Western districts" as Jamsey from Stranraer ABC said in the Scottish Boxing Forum where tributes are being paid to the man who did a great deal for amateur boxing in Scotland, both as a referee and coach. He was also to have been team manager for Scotland at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Two Scots made it to the finals of the Four Nations, with James Ancliff losing 38-17 to Nick MacDonald (Eng) in the 54kg category and Craig McEwan losing 17-6 to Andy Lee of Ireland at 75kg.

Ancliff reached the finals with a 26-15 win over Lee Fortt of Wales, while McEwan stopped his Welsh opponent Phillips in the second round of their contest.

In the semi-finals, Mitch Prince lost 19-8 to Frankie Gavin of Birmingham in the 60kg division and so missed out on the opportunity to face Mario Kindelan when Cuba come over to face a Four Nation squad on the 8th of April.

In the 64kg Mark Hastie lost 23-21 to eventual gold medallist, Jamie Cox of England. Mark had three standing counts against him and points deducted in the fourth for holding, but still came within two points of beating the highly rated southpaw from Wiltshire.

Kenny Anderson was stopped by a body shot in the third round by Ireland's European silver medallist, Kenny Egan, who went on to stop England's David Pendleton in the same round to claim the Four Nations gold at 81kg.

In the 57kg division, Gavin Hastie lost 24-6 against Gary Sykes of England, Paisley's Kris Carslaw lost 30-7 to Brett Flournoy (England) in the 69kg division, and Stephen Simmons lost 9-8 to Kevin Evans of Wales at 91kg.
